poole in the second world war
a brief history of what is still there to this day
Ringwood air raid shelter
A relatively standard surface shelter located at the side of the A31 opposite the church. There were originally two shelters one on either side of the road.  The one on the church side I believe was demolished around 1958.  The shelters' design is quite interesting.  Inside there are two compartments separated by a blast wall.  There is a ladder in each compartment leading to the roof.  This I guess comes from the first world war mentality of always having multiple exits.
